Israeli citizens were among the fourteen radical Greenpeace activists taken into custody in the Port of Ashkelon on Monday after their vessel, the Rainbow Warrior, docked illegally. After their arrival, the suspects began vandalizing vessels in the harbor. The boat docked in a restricted zone off limits to civilian craft.
Apparently, the reason behind Monday’s mission was to protest the continued use of coal in the Ashkelon power plant, perhaps prompted by the government’s recent approval of a second power plant in the city, also to be coal-driven.
The environmental activists warn the continued use of coal will have a devastating impact on the area as well as its residents.
