Israel’s Mossad Chief Warns Of Imminent Danger To Female Hostages Held By Hamas

Mossad chief David Barnea urged the security cabinet to act swiftly to secure the release of female hostages held by Hamas, warning that “the girls in captivity don’t have time to wait” for a new proposal. Barnea’s remarks came as Israel and Hamas consider a ceasefire deal that would release hostages in exchange for a cessation of hostilities.

Transportation Minister Miri Regev emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the hostages’ plight is “an open wound in society” and that Israel is obligated to act. Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel expressed concerns about the potential rape of female hostages and pressed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ignore threats from coalition partners opposed to the deal.

Netanyahu reportedly hardened Israel’s position in talks, seeking to prevent weapons smuggling and Hamas fighter movement. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi supported advancing with the current proposal, warning that any changes could delay the deal.

The plight of female hostages was highlighted by the release of images showing their physical harm. Hagit Pe’er, head of Na’amat women’s rights group, urged Netanyahu to prioritize their fate over coalition threats.

The security cabinet meeting came as Israel and Hamas consider a three-phase deal that would see Israel withdraw from Gaza in exchange for hostages and Palestinian security convicts. International mediators continue to push for an agreement, with a major sticking point being Israel’s insistence on the option to resume the war later.
