Israel: Ramadan May Hurt Livni’s Leadership Race

Members of the Tzipi Livni election campaign are afraid that the primary election, which is scheduled to be held in September, in the heart of the Muslim month of Ramadan, will result in a low voter turnout in the Arab sector, a reality that is likely to hurt Livni’s chances of emerging as the new Kadima Party leader.

While Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz, who is seen as the only real threat to Livni’s campaign, enjoys overwhelming support in the Druse community, Livni leads among the 7,000 eligible Arab voters in Kadima and campaign officials fear the Ramadan fast will result in a small turnout in that sector.
