Israel: High-Level Request for a Teudat Zehut

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni is seeking to push along a request for a blue Israeli identity card (teudat zehut) for the daughter of Ahmed Quriea (Abu Ala), the PA’s Fatah-aligned chief negotiator.

Abu Ala made the request personally, Channel 10 Israel news reported on Sunday, prompting Livni to act. His daughter currently lives in Abu Dis and she is interested in joining her husband in eastern Jerusalem, pointing out he has an Israeli ID card.

An Israeli ID card significantly facilitates travel in Israel and from PA (Palestinian Authority) autonomous areas across the Green Line. Livni has pushed the request to high-level Interior Ministry officials, the daily Haaretz reports.

Livni’s office reports a request was made 10 months ago, to which the ministry responded the office does not involve itself in such requests. Abu Ala has since turned to the Interior Ministry, without any intervention of Livni or her office.

Interior Ministry officials report the request has been approved and the entire matter was handled within the confines of the law.
