Anti-Israel NYT Posts Pathetic Excuse Of Apology For Blaming Israel For Failed PIJ Rocket Strike

The notoriously anti-Israel New York Times published an apology on Monday for blaming Israel for the explosion at a Gazan hospital last week that was subsequently proven by multiple sources, including US defense officials, to have been the result of a failed rocket launch by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group.

The pathetic apology refers to “Hamas government officials” – lending legitimacy to a band of savage terrorists who beheaded babies and carried out mass rapes and murders – and refers to another band of barbarous terrorists – the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group – as a “Palestinian faction group.” It also calls the members of the group “fighters” rather than “terrorists” – a term that even the BBC has finally agreed to use regarding Hamas.

It should be noted that both terror groups are on the official US State Department’s list of Designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

In response to the apology, Israel’s Special Envoy for Combatting Antisemitism Michal Cotler-Wunsh wrote: “The New York Times published ‘facts’ from Hamas genocidal terrorists who days before perpetrated atrocities in an assault on humanity. Murder, rape, burning alive, abduction…& published on front page of a ‘newspaper’.”

“Sorry doesn’t cut it.”

Read the apology below:

On Oct. 17, The New York Times published news of an explosion at a hospital in Gaza City, leading its coverage with claims by Hamas government officials that an Israeli airstrike was the cause and that hundreds of people were dead or injured. The report included a large headline at the top of The Times’s website.

Israel subsequently denied being at fault and blamed an errant rocket launch by the Palestinian faction group Islamic Jihad, which has in turn denied responsibility. American and other international officials have said their evidence indicates that the rocket came from Palestinian fighter positions.

The Times’s initial accounts attributed the claim of Israeli responsibility to Palestinian officials, and noted that the Israeli military said it was investigating the blast. However, the early versions of the coverage — and the prominence it received in a headline, news alert and social media channels — relied too heavily on claims by Hamas, and did not make clear that those claims could not immediately be verified. The report left readers with an incorrect impression about what was known and how credible the account was.

The Times continued to update its coverage as more information became available, reporting the disputed claims of responsibility and noting that the death toll might be lower than initially reported. Within two hours, the headline and other text at the top of the website reflected the scope of the explosion and the dispute over responsibility.

Given the sensitive nature of the news during a widening conflict, and the prominent promotion it received, Times editors should have taken more care with the initial presentation, and been more explicit about what information could be verified. Newsroom leaders continue to examine procedures around the biggest breaking news events — including for the use of the largest headlines in the digital report — to determine what additional safeguards may be warranted.”

In addition to its lack of ethical journalistic standards evident in its reporting on the explosion, the New York Times recently rehired Gazan-based journalist Soliman Hijjy, a videographer who was let go in the past due to his social media posts praising Hitler for his hatred of Jews.

  1. What’s so surprising to do this all the time!
The question is, what is anyone with a connection to Jewdisim still support this paper ??

  2. For those who must have a secular newspaper, buy The Wall Street Journal. Their reporting and editorial is easier on the stomach… If you still have a subscription to the NYT cancel it! Don’t allow this Hamas propaganda paper to contaminate your home. Even their apology, after causing untold harm to Israel and Jews in the US, is back handed and insufficient. The only sincere apology that will be accepted us if they change their anti-semitic stance and reflect it in the way they report news from the middle east.

  3. Ny times coverage is based on an eagerness to fault Israel. the apology is not sufficient because they have not changed their eagerness to find fault with Israel which was and is at the root of their coverage.

If they did not have to, they would not of issued this apology because they don’t want to.

  4. The NYT apology is obviously missing more than it contains. Yes, this anti-Semitic and immoral schmatte richly deserves to be on the receiving end of major consequences. However, we should not be fooled that boycotting the paper and cancelling subscriptions will have any impact. There is another avenue that needs to be coonsidered that will have far more impact. Look for their big advertisers, and boycott them. There is much more income coming from advertising than from subscriptions. I wish to see this schmatte go bankrupt and cease spewing and publicizing their immoral views of the world. They have proven to be a leader in media becoming liberal, woke, immoral, and anti-Jewish billboards, and an utter failure at reporting fact and news.

  5. This is something I don’t understand. Do any of these papers actually have reporters on the ground in Gaza? Or is all there information coming from Hamas? How can I actually get unbiased news media on what’s happening in Gaza?

  6. Call 1-800-698-4637 and demand an apology. This will help jam their lines and cost them money as it is an 800 number that they pay for incoming calls.

  7. You had me at the change to armed militants / Hamas soldiers from terrorists.
I don’t visit ever NYT, today’s version of Der Stürmer. I only know know about their despicable practices from other outlets such as this one.

  8. Why is the NY Times the only newspaper that the frum community, together with the Agudah, can run campaigns with outdoor advertisements and social media for it’s anti-semitic coverage during it’s reporting into the Hasidic Yeshiva system and still get surprised when they continue to print Anti-Semitic coverage ? It is no longer surprising.

  9. To end a headline in “Palestinians say”does not make it honest journalism. Palestinians also say that Jews are vermin and must be eradicated. Printing something that is true is not journalism. Even the final version after all their emendations is still slanted

  10. From the end of the piece, they basically are saying that their primary objective is to write attention-grabbing headlines, but they recognize that they also have to maintain “journalistic standards”.
