Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz, leader of the opposition National Unity party, have jointly announced the successful conclusion of negotiations to establish an emergency government in response to the ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza.
As part of this agreement, a compact war cabinet, as advocated by Gantz, will oversee the management of the war with Hamas. This war cabinet will comprise Prime Minister Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Benny Gantz. Additionally, former IDF general and National Unity MK Gadi Eisenkot, along with Minister Ron Dermer, will serve as observers within the war cabinet.
Throughout the duration of the conflict, five members of the National Unity party will be integrated into the broader security cabinet, which traditionally operates under every government. These members include Gantz, Eisenkot, MK Gideon Sa’ar, and two others yet to be determined.
Furthermore, a position within the war cabinet has been left vacant for Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, who has made it clear that he will not join the government if the Religious Zionism and Otzma Yehudit parties remain a part of it.
An important agreement has been reached that during the course of the conflict, no legislative initiatives in the Knesset or government resolutions will be pursued unless they are directly related to the management of the ongoing war.
