Israel: Senior Citizens Petition Supreme Court for Holocaust Funds

An organization representing Holocaust survivors on Wednesday petitioned the High Court of Justice demanding the national government be ordered to immediately implement the recommendations of the Dorner Commission, instructing payment be made to some 43,000 Holocaust survivors.

The commission was headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Dalia Dorner, who expeditiously fulfilled her mandate, and is now calling upon the nation to attempt to correct the moral and ethical obligation to the survivors who were treated poorly by the State of Israel.

Despite Dorner’s firm position, the government continues its foot-dragging policies, signaling the payment may only be addressed in the 2009 budget, which means it is many months away at best.

Unwilling to be trampled upon any longer, the elderly survivors are turning to the Supreme Court, perhaps their last chance to obtain a modicum of justice in their lives after being ignored by the Jewish state for decades.
