LIVE BLOG: CEASEFIRE GOES INTO EFFECT – OPERATION SHIELD AND ARROW

(AP)

On Monday, Israel launched precision strikes in Gaza, eliminating three senior members of Islamic Jihad, who had been responsible for numerous rocket attacks on Israel last week. The airstrikes, codenamed “Operation Shield and Arrow,” targeted Khalil Bahtini, the Islamic Jihad commander for northern Gaza Strip; Tareq Izzeldeen, the group’s intermediary between its Gaza and West Bank members; and Jehad Ghanam, the secretary of the Islamic Jihad’s military council.

Islamic Jihad responded with hundreds of rockets fired into Israel on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Shabbos.

Israel and the Islamic Jihad terrorist group in the Gaza Strip agreed an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire late Shabbos, seeking to halt five days of intense fighting that killed 33 Palestinian terrorists. Two people in Israel were killed by rocket fire.

The tenuous cease-fire appeared to take effect just after 10 p.m., with a last-minute burst of rocket fire and Israeli airstrikes stretching several minutes past the deadline announced by Egypt. Late Saturday, Israel reported additional incoming fire and said it was again striking in Gaza. But the calm appeared to be quickly restored.

  1. WE ARE WITNESSING NISEE NISIM, WAY ABOVE ANY POSSIBLE TEVA EXPLANATION. THE MAGEN AVRAHAM IS SHIELDING HIS BELOVED NATION!! 300 ROCKETS AND NOT ONE DEATH!! WE MUST ALL SING HASHEM’S PRAISES. THEN WE WILL BE ZOCHEH TO EVEN MORE NISSIM

  2. Is there any update on unelected FBI director Chris Wray’s investigation into the IDF practices?

  3. Efshar:
Correct! Despite the hedonistic anti torah government that Hashems people unfortunately live under, the zchus of ALL THE TORAH being learned is shielding ALL of Hashem’s children.

  4. Al daas hamakom: So if the IDF radars see an Islamic Jhiad rocket headed towards your home, there is no need for the “hedonistic anti-torah government” to waste an interceptor rocket to shoot it down since your torah learning alone will protect you. Good to know since each of the interceptor rockets costs a lot.

  5. Honestly I really want to understand the situation. Hamas, IJ fire rockets into Israel, then a ceasefire is discussed/brokered. Israel bombs a few of their sites and then enters into a ceasefire. Why not finish the job? Can someone please comment on this?

  6. שפך עליהם זעמך וחרון אפך ישיגם

‘תרדוף באף ותשמידם מתחת שמי ה

  7. With all their radars, satelites, spy & weponized drones & high tech… can’t srael blast the active rocket firing site?? A barrage of rockets & trail of smoke is continuous for a prolonged period.

You probably know the answer. The govt really doesn’t care about it citizens by placing the entire pikuach nefesh gamble on the IronDome. When they finally start caring over external PR concerns, I’ll consider moving back.

  8. Gadolhadorah: Your comment is outrageously despicable; basically wishing your fellow Jew to die. Please apologize!

  9. @gadolhadorah
Yes, we believe that the Torah is ultimately what is giving us the zchusim that we need to be saved – not the acumen of the designers of the iron dome. That doesn’t preclude the fact that the dome is part of the hishtadlus required from us to defend ourselves. With or without the dome, people can still be killed and the more we recognize that hashem is saving us the more we will be zoche to yeshuos.

  10. The rocket launchers are literally embedded across the entirety of civilian occupied housing in Gaza. Where they can be neutralized with limited collateral damage, they are taken out by the IDF fighter jets, helicopters and drones. However, to fully destroy the capability would entail a ground operation with hundreds of Israeli casualties, which may ultimately be required, but not currently warranted by the level of damage on the Israeli side of the border and the success of interception of incoming fire.

  11. Gadolhadorah- We need both, soldiers on the front and soldiers in the Bais Hamedrash. See Makkos 10

  12. Gadolhadorah- We need both, soldiers on the front and soldiers in the Bais Hamedrash. See Makkos 10

  13. A56: To the contrary. My comments along these lines are NOT a “wish for other jews to die”…I have and will continue to push back against those who negate or dismiss the contribution, sacrifice and personal valor of the IDF and security professionals who put their own lives at risk to protect those who belittle the zionist state and its institutions. Tefillah and torah-learning are obviously supportive of these military efforts but don’t exist in a vaccum. BOTH are needed are fortunately, we do have both.

  14. @Gadolhadorah might be trying to say that in addition to all the davening, learning, and other z’chusim, we (the Jewish People) must do Hishtadlus, in the form of shooting down the rockets. No-one with even a pea-sized brain would think that Israel’s current ridiculously low rate of casualties (1!!!) is due only to the Iron Dome.

  15. Besides for the hishtadlus that the IDF soldiers are doing with mesiras nefesh, we certainly need all the zechuyos from Torah and Mitzvos as the above commentators are pointing out. Of course it’s Hashem that protects us. Most importantly, we need to end sin’as chinum, machlokes and lashon harah.

  16. i really enjoy reading the comments on the yeshiva world – it opens my eyes to a whole new universe of self-serving delusion.

or as al capone said: “you can get a lot further with a gun and a smile, than with just a smile.”

  17. Yes, you know the drill. You see the headlines. You see the pictures or see it with your eyes. The spagetti lightings in the sky. You may hear the sirens. It’s real. You know what your problem is? You didn’t have enough emunah in your Medinah. So, now you have to deal with it. Probably will need to express your patriotism somehow. You might even get drafted from reserves. You need to count on the Medinah to keep yourself safe, or you will have problems? Do you get it? Do you understand yet how this works? It works like how it works that your store catches fire when you don’t pay off the maffia. Honestly, if you see the whatever falling in the sky or hear the loud sirens, you really should just think that the Medinah is trying to fool you, and you have nothing to fear. Honestly. That’s all. Don’t believe. Fight the odd regime.

  18. Of course, we need both. But Gadol’s idea may be feasible. IDF can make a map where people can register their addresses with a DNR – Do Not pRotect, maybe even get a discount on the taxes to the Zionist government. The point of this would not be to have people hurt, H’V, but so that those who say “I do not need this protection” will not be able to say that, unless they opted out.

for extra protection, maybe an “opt out” will require a letter from a psychologist and a letter from a Rav. Of course, a Rav will refer to Sotah 43 about going to war and not being afraid: only those who did not do aveira (such as stealing a house) can count on Divine protection. In this case, opting out will constitute an aveira of taking extra risk, and a loss of Divine protection. this is like you are not covered by your home insurance if you start fires in your kitchen.

  19. LIVE FROM BEITAR! I was reading Yeshiva World News and I started to think of myself what if a missile just crashed through my roof gone forbid what would I do? Literally a few seconds later I heard a faint siren and then I see the Blog shows that missiles are fired toward Beit Shemesh! Then I heard a few explosions and waited in the stairwell for the all clear.

  20. WE have eliminated the Terrorist leaders
WE have struck rocket manufacturing facilities
WE have struck terrorist command centres

RESULT – MORE ROCKETS – WE HAVE ACHIEVED NOTHING!

    ONLY HASHEM IS PROTECTING US!

  21. i think it’s time for Israel to say every rocket sent from Gaza we will move the border 1 mile further in.
too bad what the international community thinks.

  22. may we all be safe and may we all have Hashem on our side….May these reckless hateful worms be blown to bits
