AG Inclined to Close Election Fraud Case Against Lieberman

Following his petition to the Supreme Court demanding the police either charge him or close the case, Attorney General Menachem Mazuz appears inclined to order the closing of a 1999 investigation against Yisrael Beitenu leader Avigdor Lieberman. Actually, officials in the attorney general’s office report that they instructed police to close the case in April 2006, but Israel Police decided otherwise.

Mazuz however does not appear as anxious to close a second case, which developed from information in the earlier election fraud case, pointing to alleged illegal business dealings involving Lieberman and his affairs in Russia.

Preparing his response to the high court, Mazuz is prepared to close the 1999 investigation but the second case will apparently remain open as far as he is concerned.
