Rabbi Leo Dee, who lost his wife Lucy, hy’d, and two daughters Maya and Rina, h’yd, in a terror attack on Chol Hamoed Pesach, was asked to write a letter in the “Sefer Torah of Am Yisrael.”

The Sefer Torah is the initiative of Rabbi Dovid Avraham Pressman of Elad, who launched the project as a means of creating unity among the members of Klal Yisrael.

Rabbi Pressman asked Rabbi Leo to write a word in the pessukim in Devarim describing the mitzvah of shiluach hakein: “If a bird’s nest chances before you on the road…send the mother bird away, and then you may take the young for yourself.”

Over 100,000 people from all sectors of Israeli society have written an ois or word in the Sefer Torah, including HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, z’tl, the Chief Rabbanim of Israel, Rabbanim, many political figures – from the right to the left – including Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Yair Lapid, IDF soldiers, entrepreneurs, entertainment personalities, and even prisoners.

When the Sefer Torah, a first of its kind in the history of Am Yisrael, is completed, Rabbi Pressman plans on donating it for use at the Kosel.

In 2019, Netanyahu wrote the letters of his name Binyamin in the passuk in Zos HaBracha describing the brachos that Shevet Binyamin received from Moshe Rabbeinu.
Yair Lapid wrote two letters in Sefer Bereishis in 2017, the year the project was launched.

  1. @somejewiknow: your attitude is not helpful. All Jews are part of our same family/nation, observant or not, like it or not. If only we all remembered that, perhaps our galus would end. Sadly, your way of thinking is not helping bring the geulah closer.

    @coffeeaddict – I wish your comment would have stopped after your question. The second statement was simply lashon hara, again not helping out current situation.

    Hashem yerachem aleinu.

  2. Has anyone considered the implications of a mechalel shabbos befarhessia writing in a sefer Torah? If you want to show brotherly love maybe better just invite them to kiddush.

  3. The Mechaber in Yoreh De’ah paskens that Torah scrolls written by heretics should be burned. Is that not correct? Is this particular sefer Torah, which, save for some fill-in letters, has been written by a reliable Sofer Sta”m, now considered to be in the category of heretic-produced scrolls? Could some of the readers please weigh in on this?

    No,it’s not PASUL if you didn’t go to the mikveh
    and besides the point, actually no one actually writes a letter,the letter is written already by the scribe
    the person just fills it in with ink.

    How dare you? every Jew no matter what as long as his mother was Jewish, is part of AM YISROEL.
    It’s you who is a RASHA

  5. Forget the mikveh – certainly not mi’akeiv – but for michalilei Shabbos to write osiyios, is a sefer Torah of a different “min” (tarte bi’mashmah).

  6. Lapid?! Rav Shteinman ZATZAL said Yimach Shemo about him! What a disgrace that they let him write a letter in this sefer Torah. He’s an atheist! According to Halacha this sefer has to be burned

  7. @coffee addict;
    If you’re “frum” enough i.e. Satmar, the kosel is passul anyway so it’s not a real problem…
    Seriously, it’s not PASSUL if you don’t go to the Mikvah.

    @somejew;
    Please learn through the sefer Chazon Ish and SH”T MAHARAM (whom he quotes) before Paskening who’s a Rasha these days (or if there is indeed a Rasha these days).

    This site’s name should be changed to Am Meratzim World
