US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides on Tuesday took a jab at Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli who recently said that the US envoy should “mind his own business” after he instructed Israel to ‘pump the brakes” on its judicial reform plan.
“An Israeli official — I don’t know who he is — said that I should stay out of Israel’s business,” Nides said in an interview at a conference of the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Tel Aviv.
“I really think that most Israelis don’t want the US to stay out of their business,” Nides said before repeating his call to the government to slow down its judicial reform plan.
Chikli responded to Nides by writing on Twitter: “The US is our closest ally and a beacon of democracy. I’m confident it will stand by our conviction that Israeli citizens should run their own affairs and enjoy – in the words of Thomas Jefferson – ‘a government that derives its just powers from the consent of the governed.'”
