Dozens of Israelis descended on the Palestinian town of Huwara and protested violently after the death of two Israeli brothers in a Hamas-claimed shooting attack.
Hillel and Yagel Yaniv HY”D were killed earlier Sunday in an attack that took place in the town targeted by the Israeli protesters.
Homes and vehicles were set ablaze by the Israelis, and violent clashes left at least 98 Palestinians injured, and one Palestinian dead. It was not immediately clear if he was shot by civilians protesting or IDF troops amid the clashes.
The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that at least 20 were treated for smoke and tear gas inhalation, and at least one Palestinian was seriously injured after being struck in the head with a rock.
Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu urged for peace, but it appears the tinderbox has already been sparked.
In a statement on Sunday night, Prime Minister Netanyahu reminded people not to take the law into their own hands.
“A terrible tragedy occurred today. I would like to send condolences to the Yaniv family, which lost two of its dear sons; may G-d avenge them,” Netanyahu said.
“The IDF and the security forces are currently in pursuit of the murderer. We will find him. We will apprehend him and we will settle accounts with him. I ask – even when the blood is boiling – not to take the law into one’s hands. I ask that the IDF and the security forces be allowed to carry out their work. I remind you that in recent weeks, they have targeted dozens of terrorists and thwarted dozens of attacks. Let the IDF complete its pursuit and do not take the law into your hands; together we will defeat terrorism.”

The frum community needs to urgently take stock of these ultra-nationalist ideologies seeping into the community and speak up before this all gets even more out of hand. Yaakov criticizes Shimeon and Levy twice for the butchering. Once, immediately after, his argument is that now he is undefended and the goyim around him. Shimeon and Levy answer that it doesn’t matter, their sister will not be treated as a whore no matter what the risk. Yaakov REMAINS QUIET! He doesn’t have what to answer because he accepts their taana.
Second time Yaakov criticizes, is near his death bed, when he is blessing all his sons. Here, he doesn’t denounce the actual act, but the motivations of Shimeon and Levy, saying they did it partially out of emotional outburst, and not fully l’shem shamaim. This criticism is valid and not disproven.
Thus, Shimeon and Levy were right and did the right thing, albeit not 100% for the right reasons.
