During his high-level meetings in Washington, Defense Minister Ehud Barak was successful in persuading American officials to permit Israel to link to America’s global system that will permit the detection of a rocket attack prior to launch, as the rocket’s engine begins warming up. The system according to Israeli reports can detect a missile threat from 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) away, a major step towards responding to a possible Iranian attack against Israel.
Following his meetings with Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Chief of Joint Staffs Admiral Michael Mullen, America has removed its refusal to connect Israel to the advanced global warning system, primarily due to the growing threat against Israel from Iran.
The satellite system will give Israel another advantage with the ability to detect an impending missile attack before the projectile is launched.
In addition, Gates promised American assistance in the continued development of the Iron Kippa Kassam defense system as well as the Arrow 3 anti-ballistic defense system.
