Will Israel Have its First Woman President?

absRebitzen Adina Bar-Shalom is a well-known personality in Israel due to her accomplishments in the field of higher education for chareidi women as well as being a daughter of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L . Her accomplishments and vision have earned her the respect of many in all walks of Israeli life.

When questioned about amid rumors she may join the growing list of contenders seeking to become the next president, Bar-Shalom admits she is not ruling out the possibility, admitting she has not really probed the viability of her candidacy.

Bar-Shalom, 69, does appear to be discussing the idea with close friends, and they must decide if she can get 10 MKs to sign in order for her to enter the presidential race.

In 2000 Bar-Shalom established the Chareidi College, which has become her life’s work towards enabling chareidi women to obtain a higher education in an institution offering the proper environment and courses for frum women.

While she would like to be the Shas candidate in the presidential race, it is highly unlikely the Sephardi chareidi party is about to endorse a female for the post.

  1. Kol Kevudah Bas Melech Penimah is a Halacha in Shulchan Aruch and Rambam that clearly paskens that the halacha is that a woman’s place is at home and it is not in the public arena.

  2. #1 Doc,

This came up 90 years ago as a machloket between R’Kook and R’Uziel. R’Kook paskened that women could not vote or serve in public office. R’Uziel disagreed on both, and R’Uziel’s position has been universally accepted by all of klal Yisrael.

Besides, if the halachah were as you say, all the wives supporting their kollel learners would be violating halachah.
