Prime Minister Yair Lapid called Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday, the first time since 2017 that an Israeli prime minister spoke with the Palestinian Authority’s chairman.
The call came amid preparations for US President Joe Biden’s visit to the Middle East and according to reports, the request for the phone call came from the White House.
Lapid’s office issued a statement saying that “the PA chairman congratulated the Prime Minister on assuming office. The Prime Minister extended his best wishes to the PA Chairman on the occasion of the Eid al-Adha holiday.”
“The two spoke about the continuation of cooperation and the need to ensure quiet and calm.”
Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked was quick to attack Lapid’s move, stating: “Baruch Hashem, the Abraham Accords provided an opening to send Eid al-Adha greetings to a number of Arab states.”
“I suggest to wean yourself of the obsession to run to greet Abbas who appealed to the Hague court to ‘prosecute’ IDF soldiers.”
On Thursday, Defense Minister Benny Gantz met with Abbas at his headquarters in Ramallah.

Am I supposed to think it’s a positive development that an Israeli prime minister is celebrating Islamic holidays?
A news organization as virulently anti-Israel as the BBC reported that Mahmoud Abbas says money-lending Jews provoked the Holocaust. The BBC continued that the selfsame Abbas still denies any Jewish connection to the Land of Israel and calls the Jewish state a European colonial project.
Abbas’s Jew hatred runs long and deep, and it might be said that he wrote the book on it. Indeed, his 1982 doctoral dissertation, published as “The Other Side: The Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism,” gives us a window into his own particular pathology vis-a-vis the Jews.
Whenever Abbas is mentioned, his name should follow the words “Holocaust denier”. Doing so would put that wicked man in perspective and enable the world to know with whom they are dealing. Holocaust denial is deep in anti-Israel Islamism, and the sooner we Jews come to accept this truth, the better.
No Jew, no American – no human being – should call, write, or break bread with such a man. He deserves to be marginalized. That Lapid has made this shameful act of obsequiousness and reality inversion his first order of business bodes poorly for the Jewish State in the short and long term. May Hashem help and protect our beautiful little Israel.
