Following the report of attacks against females students in Modi’in Illit, Israel Police has assigned a chareidi policeman to the city in the hope of obtaining increased cooperation.
In the initial report it was stated that the school did not notify police. Police only learned of the assaults after the school sent letters home to parents. The school did not contact police.
An Arab driver who transported young women left pieces of paper with his phone number for them to contact him. He was somewhat explicit in what was being offered to the young women. One female who received one of the driver’s adverts in writing gave it to the school office and the driver was dismissed.
After police became involved the driver was arrested and questioned, admitting to the allegations against him. He told police that he did initiative contact with the women but they telephoned him. He was remanded on Tuesday 6 Shevat.
Police are aware that such incidents generally are not reported in the chareidi community. Seeking to change this unacceptable norm, a chareidi officer has been assigned to the local patrol, citing the officer is experienced in these matters.
