Prof. Dror: Olmert Not Fit to Lead

Professor Yechezkel Dror, a member of the Winograd Commission which investigated the government’s performance in the Second Lebanon War, stated over the weekend that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is not fit to lead, not in the next war and not towards achieving peace with Israel’s neighbors.

While Prof. Winograd and other commission members remain silent, unwilling to comment on their government-appointed task, Dror is calling on Olmert to “go home”. Dror stated that he would have expected that by now Olmert would have resigned or he would have been ousted but since this is not the case he explained, it is clear we are dealing with “a group of askanim”.

Dror made his statements to Kol Yisrael Israel Radio, explaining that today, Israel faces many threats and with the current realities, “I would not entrust the current leadership with decisions impacting the nation’s future. It is a tragedy, for the prime minister but better for the prime minister than a tragedy for the nation.”

He added that he does not trust Olmert to bring peace. He had sharp words for the government’s failure to implement the commission’s recommendations, or if they were implemented, it was done in a careless fashion. Former IDF chief Amnon Lipkin-Shachak was to oversee the implementation of the commission’s recommendations. The commission documented the government’s failures in handling the war, and it is clear to all that the government and the person standing at its helm are compelled to step down.

Dror warns against the prime minister continuing in office and taking responsibility for major decisions such as the threat against Israel from Iran.
