Mrs. Rena Chever, the mother of IDF soldier Guy Chever, spoke out on Tuesday, expressing her anguish over the fact that the government and the IDF appear to have forgotten her son.
On August 17, 1997, almost 11 years ago, Guy left his Golan Heights base and was heading home. He was wearing his uniform and carrying his IDF-issued weapon. He never arrived home. He seems to have vanished from a northern intersection, never to be seen again.
Rena painfully explained that even the $500,000 reward offered for information leading to him did not yield results. She has met with IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, who at the time of Guy’s disappearance was the commander of the army’s northern district, making him Guy’s senior commander. She has met with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and now asks in a broken voice why Guy’s plight is not on the table in talks with Hizbullah, why he is ignored, perhaps forgotten.
Mrs. Chever explains she cannot meet with German officials since without the backing of the media, the government, no one takes her seriously.
The family of Guy Chever believes he was taken to Syria. Since his disappearance, there has been no trace of his belongings, not his weapon, identity tag, or any part of his uniform or personal items.

The missing context in this report: A brush fire in the Golan Heights two weeks ago led to the discovery on Monday of human remains not so far from where Guy Chever disappeared. No positive ID yet on the remains.
I’m no expert, but it seems to me that there is no value to a hostage-taking/kidnapping without telling anyone about it.
