The so-called Dromi Law passed its final readings in Knesset on Tuesday, becoming law. The vote passed with a comfortable majority, 44-7, named after Shai Dromi who fired a weapon at a burglar who was detected on his Negev property in 2007, attempting to steel sheep. He killed one of the intruders, resulting in the filing of a manslaughter charge against him.
The law permits a homeowner to fire at an intruder who breaks into a home in order to repel the intruder. The law seeks to give immunity from prosecution for someone who defends his home against an intruder.
When Shas officials consulted with Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlita, he expressed support for the law.
The law provides an umbrella of protection for homeowners, but is also ambiguous, stating that it does not cover someone who acted unreasonably in the act of attempting to repel a burglar/intruder.
The law takes effect in six months.
