The Knesset Ministerial Legislative Committee on Sunday afternoon approved legislation authored by Shas MK Meshulam Nahari, addressing chareidi education needs. Two weeks ago, the Knesset Education Committee passed it for presenting it in the Knesset plenum. Shas MKs hope to enlist enough support to permit presenting the bill in Knesset this Tuesday.
According to Ladaat, quoting a “senior Shas official,” it was not easy to obtain a majority in the Sunday afternoon committee vote.
The law is intended to circumvent a Supreme Court ruling, compelling yeshiva ketanos to comply with a Ministry of Education curriculum to remain eligible for state aid. The court has stated the arrangements must be made by the start of the next school year.
The law calls for the creation of a new entity which will oversee the yeshiva ketanos, thereby bypassing the law vis-à-vis the schools and the government ministry curriculum.
