Yisrael Letterman, a 72-year-old resident of Betar Illit, is under house arrest at the home of his daughter in Yerushalayim.
The incident surrounds this week’s alleged attack, with police stating Letterman threw a cup of hot tea at a group of left-wing activists visiting Chevron. According to police and the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet), Letterman threw the cup at the group, injuring a foreign journalist who authorities report sustained facial burns. While no citizens witnessed the event, security forces are pointing a finger at Letterman, who denies the charges. His attorney, Baruch Ben-Yosef released a statement that his client is being falsely accused.
Perhaps incriminating him in the case is the fact that in 1996, Letterman was charged with throwing a hot cup of tea at then left-wing MK Yael Dayan, hitting her in the face. He was tried and found guilty, and sentenced to three years in prison.
