Tens of thousands of Arabs gathered at Har Habayis overnight Sunday, gathering rocks and other objects to throw at the police as well as fireworks and Molotov cocktails.
Police entered the site at about 8 a.m and fired stun grenades after hundreds of rioters attacked a police post and began throwing rocks from Har Habayis toward an adjoining road. Sixteen police officers were injured, with some evacuated to the hospital for medical treatment.
Earlier on Monday morning, Israel Police announced that Jews will not be allowed within Har Habayis on Monday, following a security assessment. The announcement drew the ire of right-wing politicians.
