After serving in Knesset for decades, it appears President Shimon Peres sees there is a better way. In his address during a ceremony in which he officially received the Israel Democracy Report, Mr. Peres stated Israel should take an example from other countries which limit terms in office to 4 or 8 years. The president stated one mustn’t make a lifetime career of serving in public office.
The president also believes with some 230,000 students in the nation’s institutions of higher learning, students who have completed IDF service and “were given guns and planes” and they should be able to be directly elected to Knesset, suggesting that the universities be designated as their own electoral districts to accommodate such a reality.
