The political – security cabinet met on Wednesday for five hours after which it was announced Israel will give Egyptian negotiators an additional chance to achieve a ceasefire with Hamas that will halt rocket attacks.
The Egyptian initiative is also expected to contain Israel’s demands for the release of Gilad Shalit. Messages released by Hamas officials indicate the soldier’s release is not tied to a ceasefire but it is directly tied to Hamas demands that Israel release over 400 terrorists. Such a move stated Hamas leader Khaled Meshal from Damascus would result in Shalit’s immediate release.
The cabinet message is however a conditional one, stating that simultaneous to the Egyptian initiative, Israel will be preparing for a wide scale IDF operation in Gaza should such a move prove necessary.
Ministers following the meeting explained the media that they are not commenting, but prior to the cabinet session in statements to the press the majority did indicate they favored a military action.
Ironically, while the ministers were meeting another rocket attack resulted in injuries, with two people transported to Soroka Medical Center for treatment of shrapnel and smoke inhalation.
