A decision was made on Monday to reduce the number of people allowed into Israel each day from 2,000 to 200, following a meeting of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Transportation Minister Miri Regev and Health Minister Yuli Edelstein.
Only “urgent humanitarian cases” will be approved for entry. The new quota will go into effect next week and will be implemented until quarantine in hotels is restored or another solution is found.
The decision comes in response to the revocation of the requirement for returning Israelis to quarantine in state-run hotels, which was knocked down on Sunday by the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee.
Deputy Health Minister Yoav Kisch on Sunday slammed the committee’s decision to end the hotel quarantine requirement. “The decision to close hotels opens a gateway for mutations to enter,” Kisch said.

This on again/off again….open/closed ….game by a bunch of political hacks is killing people and destroying the economy of EY. If there is a risk, which there obviously is, shut down travel into the county with ZERO exceptions. We know that ” urgent humanitarian cases” will quickly morph into some wealthy askan who wants to attend his grandson’s chassanah or some politically connected Rebbe who was spending the winter in warmer climates and wants to return home. Lock down the country for several weeks until they get a handle on these new Covid variants and whether the Pfizer vaccine (relied upon almost exclusively in EY) is effective. We’ve gone for a week or two without nightly photos on the news page of rabbonim and askanim who were niftar from Covid. Here in the U.S., it is impractical to impose a ban on inbound travel but EY has 100 percent control over land-crossings and ONE international airport so all it takes is the political will to briefly impose a travel ban until the medical professionals have a reasonable sense of their ability to treat and control the spread of the new variants.
