Agriculture Minister Shalom Simchon warns the situation for the nation’s farmers is a bleak one, especially following another drought year.
The ministry plans to eliminate some 100,000 dunam (25,000 acres) of farmland due to the lack of water. One wheat farmer reports that his last crop yielded 1,100 tons, a sharp decline from the previous year’s crop of 7,000 tons, blaming the painful reality on the water shortage.
Simchon stated in the coming five years, more farmers will be compelled to stop growing as the water crisis intensifies.
