NIS 60 Million Allocated to Save Sheirut Leumi

Following a meeting by cabinet ministers, the Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Education officials have agreed to earmark NIS 60 million to the Sheirut Leumi (National Service) program to permit 3,150 post high school females to serve in schools around the country, assisting in problematic and low-income communities.

Earlier in the month the volunteers learned that due to budgetary cuts, the 3,150 girls would not be assigned as in the past. This number represents about one-third of the force of Sheirut Leumi volunteers seen around the country.

Government officials are signaling that efforts are now underway towards finding a solution to the budget cuts for IDF preparatory yeshivas, many faced with the bleak possibility of closing their doors due to severe monetary constraints resulting from budget cuts.
