A memorial to the victims of the 1995 Beit Lid double suicide bombing attack is scheduled to be dedicated on Tuesday, after 13 years of efforts towards its completion.
On January 22, 1995, two suicide bombers dressed as IDF soldiers mingled in the crowded hitchhiking post in the Sharon area, and blew themselves up.
At about 9:30am, the first terrorist fell to the ground as if he was ill, prompting soldiers to run to assist him. He then detonated the bomb he was carrying.
After the arrival of emergency responders, the second terrorist entered the crowd and detonated his bomb.
After the smoke cleared, a third bomb was found but the last bomber did not make it to the location. 22 people were murdered and many others wounded. 21 of the victims were IDF soldiers.
The memorial depicts a ladder heading heavenward with the victims climbing on it.
Family members are relieved, explaining they fought for years for the establishment of a memorial but government agencies and powers that be dragged their feet for too long.
