Doctors in Shaare Zedek Hospital in Yerushalayim report that former Chief Rabbi Mordechai [Tzemach ben Mazel Tov] Eliyahu has suffered a stroke. His level of consciousness appears compromised as a result. Reports regarding his mental status are conflicting.
On Pesach the rav suffered a major heat attack and was released following a cardiac catheterization, bypass surgery and a modest rehabilitation period. He was later brought to the hospital complaining of chest pain, but a second heart attack was ruled out.
On Tuesday it was reported the rav was in cardiac arrest and successfully resuscitated and on Wednesday morning, Rav Eliyahu’s personal aide Rav Zafrani reported the rav was communicating by writing. It appears since the morning hours, he did suffer a stroke.
AS WE GO TO PRINT: YWN has learned that Rav Eliyahu Shlita is being transferred at this time from Shaare Zedek to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Yerushalayim after it was determined that he suffered a stroke.
UPDATE – 19:58 ISRAEL TIME: Doctors have decided not to transfer Rav Eliyahu to Hadassah Hospital and he now remains in Shaare Zedek Hospital.

Two years ago, Mishpacha magazine interviewed Rav Eliyahu’s son, who repeated the story that the Baba Sali gave R’ Mordechai Eliyahu a coat and told him that he will live to see Moshiach, and he’d like him to wear this coat when he greets Moshiach. If R’ Eliyahu is sick, then either Moshiach is coming really soon, or he’ll bez”h have a complete recovery.
before R Kaduri tzl passed away , the Rav was quoted as saying that mashiach is in the world, and that he saw him.
In any case, may Hashem send a complete refuah shelemah to Rav Eliyahu. What a giant of torah and a great leader of klal yisrael.
Ashreichem,
Perhaps, r”l and ch”v’sh, this dor is not currently worthy of seeing Moshiach so the bracha may not come to pass?
Kollelman1,
I heard that rumor, too. But, subsequently, Mishpacha interviewed Rav Kaduri and specifically asked him about these rumors. He said clearly that there are many people claiming to be his students making statements in his name, that the rumors aren’t true, and that only statements made by his son, David, could be trusted to be authentic.
May Hashem heal R’ Eliyahu, one of the greatest Sephardic chachamim alive today.
Arutz 7 [Hebrew site] is reporting that Rav Eliyahu Shlita has regained consciousness! A miracle, B”H’!!! May he continue to recoup his strength until he has a full recovery!
Let’s all be careful with Moshiach predictions. Ashreichem, if God forbid R’ Eliyahu passes away before Moshiach comes, what happens then? Does your emunas chachamim go out the window? Do we start thinking deeper meaning of what he must have meant? Let’s all slow down, do what we’re supposed to do and leave Moshiach timing up to God.
to bluepinky i agree with u besides for the “leaving Moshiach timing” up to Hashem…its up to us…who knows how many times weve missed him….Hashem will “time” moshiachs arrival based on bnei yisraels readiness and want for him…
Latest update from Arutz 7:
Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu returned to Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Jerusalem in the early morning hours Thursday following a delicate neurological procedure carried out overnight at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, also in Jerusalem.
The venerable rabbi suffered a stroke as well as cardiac arrest on Wednesday, a scant month after suffering a major heart attack. The public is asked to recite chapters of Psalms for Rabbi Mordechai Tzemach ben Mazel Tov.
