Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Finance Minister Roni Bar-On and Education Minister Prof. Yuli Tamir will be meeting later in the week in the hope of reaching a solution surrounding the Sheirut Leumi crisis.
YWN news reported HERE on May 14th that as a result of budgetary cuts, 3,000 Sheirut Leumi volunteers were be dropped from the program for the coming year. That number by the way is more accurately 3,150, a reality that will have a profound negative impact on schools which have come to rely on the highly-motivated volunteers to work in underprivileged areas, with special education students and other areas demanding more personal attention.
At present, Minister Tamir is working to find the funds to save the program, realizing the cut of the over 3,000 volunteers will deliver another blow to the nation’s ailing education system.
The Sheirut Leumi annual budget is reported to be NIS 82 million.
