Likud Jerusalem Affairs Minister Ze’ev Elkin decided on Monday afternoon to remove Tiveria mayor Ron Kobi from office.
According to law, a council that does not approve a budget by the [extended] date determined by the Interior Ministry is dispersed. Kobi failed to pass a budget for Tiveria by the original deadline after being elected as mayor over a year ago and failed to pass a budget by the extended deadline granted to him by the Interior Minister.
Elkin took over the authority to decide on Kobi’s case after a Supreme Court ruling approved transferring the case from Interior Minister Aryeh Deri to Elkin due to Kobi’s constant accusations that the Chareidi Interior Minister is “out to get him.” Although the Supreme Court did not agree with Kobi’s claim that Deri should not rule on his case due to a conflict of interests, they agreed to transfer authority to Elkin since Deri wanted to prevent Kobi from claiming he was victimized by the Chareidi Interior Minister.
In the long-drawn-out process of ousting Kobi from office, the combative mayor has repeatedly appealed to the Supreme Court in order to delay the process and has even claimed he was sick to delay a hearing. Kobi reportedly obtained the “sick note” from a doctor in an Arab town.
Following Elkin’s decision, Deri held a meeting with Interior Ministry senior officials and decided to appoint Deputy Director of the Interior Minister Moni Ma’atok as chairman of the council responsible for Tiveria and appointed senior municipal officials in Tiveria as council members. In accordance with the law, the appointed council will remain in position for at least three years, after which the Interior Minister will decide on a date for new elections.
Kobi, who won on a campaign of vitriol against the Chareidi and religious community, has lost the approval of virtually all of Tiveria’s residents, including completely secular ones, due to his constant outrageous attacks against religion and religious people, combative behavior and his incompetence and lack of professionalism.
Last year, Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky predicted that Kobi will suffer a significant downfall. See the video below:

Perhaps its time we spend more time digesting why a majority of our brothers in teveria voted for this fool and less time trying to decipher rabbinic code words.
someone told rav chaim to say that, and he did. That was a bracha for us that came true, not a prediction.
Good riddance!
Last year, Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky predicted that Kobi will suffer a significant downfall. In light of this, Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky’s security must immediately be bolstered and stepped up, as it is safe to assume that Kobi is planning a very severe revenge attack against Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky for having predicted his downfall.
This article is biased and highly untrue. Ron is a good man who has a vision for what he believes that Tivera should be. The media always blows facts out of proportion.
It is unfair to describe Ron Kobi as an uncompetent Mayor. I agree with the comment above. Ron is indeed a good person. He did good things in Tveriah. What causes problem is the desacration of Shabbat. But he is a man who loves his city, that’s for sure. And he did not fake illness, he was really sick. He had pneumonia.
@ilovetora
Ron Kobi did not win a majority of Tverya. He won because the Charedi / Mesorati vote got split (Rav Kook ran a 3rd party candidate). For years Tverya has been a Shas town.
BTW I have an apartment in tverya & I travel there quite often, trust me I know that Ron Kobi doesn’t represent the nature of the wonderful people of that city. Most chilonim there appreciate & respect religion & chareidim, not to mention the economy of Tverya comes largely from chareidi vacationers & tourists.
