With the political community looking for a way out of the political “checkmate” that has existed over the past months, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is now calling for the direct elections of the prime minister, towards “letting the people decide” as PM Netanyahu put it.
Based on recent election polls showing he remains the favored candidate for prime minister, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has increased his lobbying efforts to persuade the public to demand a direct election of the prime minister, adding, “let the people decide”, as he remains confident he will be reelected.
Netanyahu points an accusing finger at MK Benny Gantz and his Blue & White list, who he accuses of sabotaging efforts towards the establishment of a national unity coalition government.
PM Netanyahu used the opportunity to lash into Gantz, insisting, “Likud has come a long way and spared no effort towards establishing a unity government. An election is a waste. I updated Benny Gantz and others in Blue & White with the sensitive intelligence material available. They are well aware of the Iranian threat. They are well aware of the huge opportunity with the United States and the Arab nations. Yet, they do not place national interests at the top of their minds, which in Yair Lapid’s case is busy with the fantasy of becoming prime minister.”
Blue & White was quick to release its response, stating, “We are busy working to prevent a needless, expensive election and not with political spins calling for the direct election of the prime minister. Elections will bring us to the exact point we find ourselves now…”

with the result being a prime minister who lacks the support of the legislature
Works fine with a constitution such as the American, with separation of powers
Fails miserably in a British-style parliamentary system which relies on a prime minister supported by the legislature
Interesting. The Dems have also increasingly been calling for “direct election” of the U.S. President so that the winner of the POPULAR vote is the winner. I guess the NEW rule is that “whatever rule will ensure my election and/or staying in office is the preferred public policy and I fully support changing the system until the numbers no longer work” and then the preferred policy is the OLD rule.
Direct Elections is the only way
Well said Bibi! Benny Gantz will lose badly if Israel voted directly for PM. His success is being 4 parties combined into 1 vs. Likud which is ONE PARTY!!
if whenever the system framework has problems you say let’s go change the system
This will Lead to & is bound to Lead to mass instability and destabilization Far and Beyond
good idea
