Dozens of motorcycles blocked the Ayalon Highway during the Sunday morning rush hour in protest over police announcing it is going to crack down on drivers who use the shoulder of roads to move ahead in traffic.
In past years, police decided not to enforce the law when seeing motorcycles using the shoulders of roads to pass traffic congestion, but now, this has changed, and the drivers of motorcycles are angry.
Police claim the reason for the change in policy is that too many motorcycles are involved in accidents as a result. Under the new policy, the fine for driving on the shoulder will be NIS 250 without points on one’s license.

Interesting that the cars didn’t try to go around them on the shoulders…but that might have been dangerous.
In NY there is an understanding with Harley riders which don’t have a radiator that they can use the shoulders at a slow pace so that they don’t overheat in traffic. Such Harleys need to be traveling at least 20-25 MPH in order to properly air cool the engine. There are a few of those in EY, but not many.
The police is doing this due to safety consideration – but unfortunately safety is not important to the public.
This is terrible. I hope no yenta’s from Brooklyn missed their flight back home because of this traffic. I hope no one missed their scheduled medication because of this. Oh wait a minute. It was chilonim blocking traffic. Forget it. Sorry.
