Brazilian Premiere Soccer Team Corinthians Paulista, which hails from Sao Paulo, will don a yellow Maen David as part of their uniform during their upcoming soccer match on Wednesday night against Fortaleza in order to commemorate Kristallnacht.
In a moving video that the club published by the soccer club, the Corinthians explained that until 2012 they used to wear a star on their jerseys in order to show pride in the titles that they have won. Now, they will be wearing a star again, but this time it will be a yellow star of David to commemorate Kristallnacht. The goal of the initiative is to remember and cause others to remember that hate has no place among us in order to prevent another scenario like the Holocaust and Kristallnacht from happening ever again.
The club also posted on their website, that the shirts will be sold immediately after the game and the proceeds from all of the shirt sales will go to build a monument commemorating the atrocity that was Kristallnacht.
Ernesto Schwartzer, A Hasbara activist in South America related: “The statement being made by the club of the Corinthians is very moving to all of the Jewish communities in South America. Having a public body such as the Corinthians soccer club commemorate Kristallnacht, will bring about a massive wave of public interest in the events of the Holocaust. Already many articles have been printed about the initiative all across the Latin American world. I sincerely hope that actions such as this are taken up by all of the major sports teams and that it helps soccer fans across the entire continent understand better what happened in Germany, and that it helps to combat the plague of modern anti-Semitism.
