KAN News released a report some time ago, in which it explains to the tzibur the unique requirements for building apartments for the chareidi tzibur, as compared to the non-religious community.
Some of the examples given in the video include; the need for a sukka balcony, a large space to accommodate a dinning table for more than four people, larger apartments, and the ability to expand the apartment in the future.
It is explained that an investor has to meet the requirements of a tender while remaining competitive, and therefore, an apartment may have the ability to be expanded, but those areas are not completed in the original phase of construction to keep the price down in line with demand.
The report adds the buildings are generally not as high as often seen today in Israel, because even with Shabbos elevators, many prefer not to rely on them, in line with piskei halacha. However, today, almost three years since the original report, more persons are relying on elevators and taller buildings are seen in many frum areas, including Jerusalem’s Kiryat Belz.
