VIDEOS/PHOTOS: Fire On Jerusalem’s Ben-Yehudi Street Leaves One Man In Critical Condition


Eight fire apparatus responded to a Wednesday morning fire on Jerusalem’s Ben Yehuda Street as smoke was seen emanating from a residential building. A 50-year-old man was transported to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Hospital in serious condition following CPR. He was listed in critical/unstable condition. Five others were extricated from the burning building by firefighters.

Officials in Shaare Zedek Hospital reported one victim was in critical condition upon his arrival in the trauma unit. A second person was listed in moderate/stable condition.

It was reported later in the day that the critically injured victim was transported to Assaf HaRofeh Hospital for treatment in the hyperbaric chamber as he suffers from sever smoke inhalation.

The fire broke out in 11 Ben Yehuda Street. Eight fire apparatus responded and the process of clearing the tenants from the burning building began immediately upon the fire department’s arrival. Police worked with firemen to get the tenants out of the building.

MDA paramedic Refael Herbst reported that heavy smoke was seen from the top floor of the residential structure. “A 50-year-old man was in cardiac arrest from heavy smoke inhalation. We began to resuscitate him, and his spontaneous pulse returned. We transported him immediately to the hospital in serious/unstable condition. Others were rescued from the building by firemen and they too were treated and transported”.

Police report that the preliminary investigation into the fire led to the detention of two suspicious persons seen in the area of the building shortly before the fire.
