Tzfas Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu is campaigning for chareidi support in his bid to become Israel’s next Rishon L’Tzion. In recent days, Rav Eliyahu visited with a number of admorim, Kikar Shabbat reports, including the Gerrer, Sanzer and Vishnitzer Rebbes.
Rav Eliyahu already enjoys support for the dati leumi community, including Bayit Yehudi party leader Naftali Bennett. However, his campaign faces opposition and Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein plans to question the rabbi regarding his policies regarding the rental and sale of homes to Arabs in Tzfas. In the past, the rabbi has spoken out strongly opposing this, explaining there is a land war in the holy city and Halacha prohibits Jews from giving Arabs a foothold in the city.

Rabbi Eliyahu deserves huge credit for his zealotry in correcting a situation caused by the rasha Leib Tropper. He and Rabbi Dov Lior along with a third rabbi who has remained anonymous convened a beit din which converted the woman that Tropper had harassed. Like a modern day Pinchas he acted when others were silent or complicit.
