Three people, including a senior Jerusalem City Hall official, were arrested by police on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, suspected of offenses related to public corruption.
For the past ten months, police have been conducting a covert investigation into corruption among employees in Jerusalem City Hall and City Hall related companies. They allegedly took and gave bribes for the promotion of personal interests for about seven years.
A senior official and his personal assistant stand suspected of providing free tickets to events and performances sponsored by the city over the years, suspected of promoting favors and personal interests, including the cancelation of parking tickets to those close to him.
It was also suspected that the senior member of the municipality company acted in this way to obtain permits for the demolition of a building in the south of the city, which is defined as a “building for preservation”, a building in his wife’s possession, and the construction of a residential building.
The suspects, ranging in age in their 30s and 70, are residents of Jerusalem and the surrounding area. The suspects were arrested in their homes on Tuesday morning and taken directly for questioning. They were arraigned later in the day in the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court.
