Once again, the government turned to the High Court of Justice, seeking yet another extension to the deadline to legislate a new draft law. This is due to the fact that once again, Israel is heading to elections.
According to the News12 report, the state is asking to extend the deadline for legislating a new draft law to January 2, 2020, three months after the new Knesset will be elected, to provide time to complete the work on the bill.
The previous deadline for legislating a new law is July 28, 2019, which was based on three months following the election of the current Knesset, but the dissolving of the Knesset without forming a new coalition led to elections once again.
The government’s inability to legislate a draft law due to the ongoing dispute between the chareidi parties and the Yisrael Beitenu party headed by Avigdor Lieberman was a major component leading to early elections and dissolving of the Knesset. This led to elections for the 21st Knesset, which failed to establish a coalition, once again because of the inability to accommodate Lieberman’s demands, and now, the state heads to elections for the 22nd Knesset.
