More than 600 Bnei Brak 8th grade graduates participated in a Kinus gathering this past Friday entitled, “Tzeida LaDerech.” The purpose of it was to help prepare them for their entrance into upper level Yeshiva beginning at ninth grade level.
The gathering was held in the city auditorium in Ramat Elchanan. It was the brainchild of Rav Dovid Cohen, Rosh Yeshiva of the Hevron Yeshiva and member of Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah.
The highlight of the gathering was a question and answer session that was conducted in the home of the Sar HaTorah, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky shlita and shown to the bochurim on video. The words of Rav Chaim were transliterated on the screen so that they could understand.
Some of the questions that Rav Chaim Kanievsky answered included the following:
- Let’s say that a bochur is shteiging and wishes to learn late at night after night seder, but it will prevent him from arriving at shacharis in a timely manner – should he do it? Rav Chaim answered, “No,” saying that Tefilah is more important.
- A Talmid was given a weak chavrusah and it is very difficult for him to study with him on account of his weak skills. Is he obligated to continue studying with him or may he request a different chevrusah. Rav Chaim answered that he is not obligated in remaining with him, but he can do a chessed and learn with him.
- A talmid wishes to study alone without a Chevrusah. May he do so and are there any parameters or limitations to this? Rav Chaim answered that it depends on the reason he does not want a chavrusa. He thinks that when he learns alone he has less of a desire to be mevatel Torah. Rav Chaim answered that it is a valid enough reason
- A bochur has some time in the afternoon in between sedarim. Should he learn Navi or additional Gemorah in bekius? Rav Chaim answered There is no nafka mina. The main thing is that he should learn.
- What time of krias shma should a bachur be stringent on during bain hazmanim [that of the mogain avrohom (earlier) or the vilna gaon (later)? If he can – he should do the earlier one
- Must we be stringent regarding bochrim walking in the street with a jacket and hat? Rav Chaim answered: If not, there will be a Chilul Hashem. Asked further: How will this be a Chilul Hashem? Rav Chaim answered, “Because they will say that bochrei yeshivos are not makpid (careful).

Q1 was mistranslated. “Should he learn late and miss davening in yeshiva, or daven with yeshiva?” “No – Tefila is first.”
Q2 was “Learning alone, either he’ll cover more ground, or he’ll have less of a yeitzer for bitul Torah.” The answer was “A Ta’ana” which means “A definite maybe” i.e. depends on the bochur
Q3 was not about bein hasedarim, it was “extra time in the afternoon.” The answer was just “No difference,” no explanation. We can only assume he was answering the question as asked, which means again, it depends.
Q4 was accurate
Q5 was LEFT OUT! “A bochur that can’t learn all of the parsha with Rashi, should he learn another peirush, should he learn part of the parsha, other rishonim, etc.?” Answer: “No difference, the main things is to learn.”
Q6 was LEFT OUT! “How can we help bochurim not waste time?” “To daven.”
Q7 (Q6 on the list above) was accurate
Q8 “Shnayim Mikrah – better with Rashi or Targum?” “Targum, it’s in the gemarra”
Q/A9 “Any bochur that wants to can learn alone.” “The ikar is that he learns.”
