Beginning on Sunday, Israel Police returned to using speed cameras as part of its traffic enforcement campaign. This refers to the A3 cameras, which have been out of use for about a year. Police announced enforcement will return to a full complement immediately.
About a year ago, police officials announced they would stop using the cameras until the department can speak with the experts towards determining the reliability of the A3 speed detection devices. After receiving expert opinions verifying the integrity and reliability of the cameras in question, the State Prosecutor’s Office has once again given its approval for the use of the speed detection devices to issue summonses for drivers exceeding the speed limit.
While the cameras were officially not in use during the past year, stationary speed detection cameras around the country continued taking photos during the year and it remains unclear at present what will occur with those photos, the vehicle documented breaking the law during the hiatus period. Police have signaled that a notification to the public will be made soon regarding those photos.
News12 correspondent Moshe Nussbaum reported that it is believed most drivers will not be held accountable for their actions during the year; with the exception of serious law-breaking or excessive speeding.
