The oppressive heatwave that hit Israel on Wednesday drove many indoors, looking for an air-conditioned environment to escape the heat.

According to Israel Electric Company officials, an all time high in demand for electricity was reached during the afternoon hours, 13,410 megawatts, and that number is expected to increase during the afternoon hours.

The previous record was reached during a cold wave this past winter, 13,058 megawatts. Israel Electric officials add this year, 2019, appears to be a record breaker.

Temperatures soared around the country due to the sharav, which was accompanied by extremely hot and dry conditions.
