Shaked Expected To Take The Second Slot On The United Right-Wing Ticket

Persons close to former minister, Ayelet Shaked, signal that she is close to accepting the offer to run in the number two slot on the URWP ticket in the upcoming Knesset Election, on Tuesday, September 17, 2019. If this is the case, she will once again ask to be placed in the Justice Ministry slot, which she held in the previous administration, however, her New Right party failed to pass the electoral threshold, and she and her co-founder of the party, Naftali Bennet, are out of the Knesset.

It now appears she will move back to Bayit Yehudi, which hopes to merge with other right-wing parties and run as the United Right-Wing Party (URWP) in the upcoming election. The first slot would remain in the hands of Rabbi Rafi Peretz and Minister Betzalel Smotrich would be pushed to the third slot.

While there is an audible voice in the dati leumi community calling to place Shaked at the helm of the dati leumi party, last week, prominent rabbonim in that community published a letter stating that only a Shomer Shabbat person should be leading the party, thereby disqualifying Shaked for the spot.

Meanwhile, MK (Likud) David Biton announced on Sunday, that it is final, and former New Right leader Ayelet Shaked will not be running on the Likud ticket in the upcoming Knesset election despite some reports to the contrary. “The prime minister has no interest in this” Biton stated during an interview with Assaf Lieberman and Kalman Lipskind on KAN Reshet Bet Radio.

Biton explained that Shaked moving to Likud is not relevant, adding “She will not be in Likud – it is final!”
