335 Kilograms of Hashish and Cannabis, equaling a combined worth of more than 10 million shekel was caught in a drug bust that is one of Israel’s largest in recent years. In addition to the contraband substances that were confiscated by the authorities, two suspects were arrested who were involved in the attempt to smuggle the drugs from Egypt into Israel.
The operation was carried our by the Magen division of the Israeli police in conjunction with undercover border police personnel.
The security forces positioned themselves early on Friday night along the Egyptian-Israeli border and saw dozens of Egyptian smugglers approach the border fence. The smugglers put up ladders against the fence, climbed them and threw the drugs, that were packaged in large bags, over to the Israeli side.
The police then saw numerous figures on the Israeli side of the border gather up the bags and load them into their vehicles.
While the smuggling operation was underway, the commander of the police force signaled his officers to move in and arrest the suspects on the Israeli side of the border. The suspects fled in their vehicles and the police gave chase. Police utilized non-lethal weapons and spikes to stop the vehicles and apprehend the suspects. Two suspects were caught as were four of the vehicles. Mounted on the vehicles were some 15 bags of smuggled materials. After inspecting the bags police found the illegal drugs and confiscated them.
The evidence, including the vehicles and illegal substances, as well as the suspects (aged 40 and 19 from the periphery around the Ramat Hovav region of the Negev), were taken into police custody.
