Cabinet Approves an Extended Daylight Savings Time in Israel

clock.gifThe cabinet on Sunday, 15 Tammuz 5773 approved extending daylight savings time until the end of October as is customary in European countries. The new regulation will begin this year upon recommendation of Interior Minister (Likud) Gideon Saar.

The Knesset is expected to vote on the new regulation in a first reading on Monday, 16 Tammuz. Bayit Yehudi MK Zevulun Kalfa was among those who stated the move will make life increasingly difficult for frum Jews as sunrise in October will be close to 7:00am, making davening with a minyan and arriving at work on time increasingly difficult for many.

Nevertheless, the secular community praised the move, insisting it provides long daylight hours and saves the economy significant sums in energy costs.

  1. zevulun kalfa and his whole party should start realizing what they want to do to religion and finally choose sides

  2. Daylilght savings can be bad for those going to early minyan, or who want to travel on Motsei Shabbos.

Daylight savings is good for those trying to get home in time for Mincha-Maariv, and is good for those who want to travel on Erev Shabbos.

If you are in a yeshiva, or a business serving frum people, it is irrelevant since you can adjust your schedule as needed.

  3. It should only make it easier to arrive at work on time, if neitz is earlier requiring people to start their day earlier.

  4. It is true that this makes Shacharis more difficult. I just want to remind people that it also makes Erev Shabbos easier.
