Oppositional Neighbors In Carmiel Prevent The Opening Of A Yeshiva For The New Zman

Yeshivas Rinat Yisrael in Carmiel is facing a difficult situation following the Chodesh Nissan bein hazmanim. The yeshiva reports it is being targeted by angry secular neighbors, and the harassment has reached a new level, so much so that it has delayed the opening of the new zman.

According to a Kikar Shabbos News report, residents of the city of Carmiel occasionally penetrated the yeshiva compound to take pictures of the dining room and find health irregularities, and the findings were sent to the Health Ministry.

In the wake of this, the inspectors of the ministry came from time to time for routine examinations at the yeshiva. The last time the dining room was secretly filmed by one of the neighbors, and many faults were discovered, it led to a closure order for the yeshiva and forbidding students to enter the compound until the defects were corrected.

The new zman was scheduled to begin on Sunday, the first day of Rosh Chodesh Iyar, but the talmidim were informed at the last minute that the yeshiva is ordered closed until further notice.

On Monday morning, talmidim gathered and began the new zman in Bnei Brak and Modi’in Illit together with some of the rabbonim of the yeshiva at their side. They are informed they will not be able to return to their yeshiva in the coming days because the violations have yet to be corrected. Work is reportedly ongoing to correct the violations.

  1. Is it harassment to find problems with the the health and wellbeing of the Talmidim? Why should they dine and rest in substandard conditions?

  2. The Mir: the “sincere concern” those Carmiel residents are displaying toward the bnei yeshiva is not necessarily harassment. Getting the yeshiva shut down is.
