Former Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat on Tuesday, sent a letter to Knesset comptroller Chaim Avidor, informing him that he doesn’t plan to take his monthly salary, and he will be working for NIS 1 annually.
A referral to the Knesset Comptroller follows the accountant’s remarks at the seminar for the new Knesset members, according to which there is a procedural problem for a member of Knesset to give up his salary.
Barkat, who in the last decade as mayor of Jerusalem served in his position at a salary of one shekel a year, approached the accountant and asked to continue in his new position as a Knesset member, setting his salary to a single shekel a year.
“For me it is a great privilege to serve the public without receiving any compensation,” Barkat wrote.
Barkat added, “I am sure that, as is possible in the Jerusalem municipality, I can continue to do so in my capacity as MK.”
