At the beginning of the week, Israeli police arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of defrauding thousands of shekels from elderly people while posing as an innocent person trying to help them use an ATM, exploiting their innocence.
Following a complaint about the sting of elderly people at ATMs in Jerusalem, the police began an investigation which revealed that a suspect who pretended to be an innocent kind person who was trying to help the elderly, persons in their 80s, to use their credit card with an ATM.
The suspect approached his victims at an ATM, stood behind them in line and when they tried to withdraw money, he would assist them, taking advantage of their innocence and withdrawing NIS 1000 and then making off with the money.
During the interrogation, the interrogators managed to trace the suspect and reveal his identity, an Arab resident of East Jerusalem in his 30s, and at the beginning of the week he was arrested and questioned. The investigators were able to locate the stolen money, meet the victims and return their money as shown in the accompanying video.
A prosecutor’s statement was issued against the suspect by the police prosecution unit and the court extended his detention until April 12th to permit time to prepare and file a criminal indictment against him.
“We are glad that once again we have succeeded in arresting a suspect who damaged the property of the elderly, and to return the money used for their livelihood,” the police said,
