The new polymer NIS 20 note has hit the streets and is making quite an impression. The new bill is essentially the same design as its predecessor, but made of long-lasting polymer, giving it a plastic/rubber texture.
There is also a transparent window with a “20” engraved on it to facilitate identifying the denomination of the bill. There is also a limited edition with “60 years of Israel” on it, acknowledging this year’s special birthday.
Israel is the 27th country to incorporate a polymer bill in its currency and if the NIS 20 note is deemed a success, other bills may follow suit. It is hoped that the widely used NIS 20 will outlast the former standard paper note, thereby justifying the increase in production costs, almost 50% more than the older version, which was 30 agorot each.
