Anyone traveling from the city center towards Givat Shaul Street in Jerusalem before Pesach took notice of the enormous tent erected on the beginning of the hill leading to Givat Shaul Street, measuring 25,000 square feet. The tent was the operational base for Mesamche Lev, the organization headed by Rabbi Zalman Ashkenazi, providing genuine assistance for thousands of families.
It must be emphasized that the organization does not just assist, but organizers takes great care to address the difficult situation of families requiring assistance, mailing them magnetic [credit] cards to permit them to come to the tent store with their children and ‘shop’ rather than waiting on line for a handout.
Here are some of this year’s Pesach stats: 60,000 pairs of shoes were given out, as was 30,000 lbs of mehudar shmura matzah, 4,000 cases of wine and 300,000 lbs of fish.
Organization officials report in addition, a half a million dollars was given out to 2,000 orphans and 413 widows.

Mi keamcha yisrael!
When I read this story in the HaModia I had tears in my eyes. The dignified way in which this mammoth project is carried out is truly phenomenal. The responses from some of the ‘customers’ shows how valuable this organisation is. A big Yasher Koach to R’ Ashkenazi and his dedicated team of staff. It makes one feel privileged to be a part of klal yisroel!
